Red Bull is the nectar of the gods for busy college students and overworked mothers everywhere. However, drinking can after can of Red Bull can get kind of boring. Have you considered the option of turning this energy drink into a powerful energy smoothie?
That’s right! Homemade Red Bull smoothies are a thing. And not only are they a delicious way to get the energetic benefits of caffeine and taurine, but the recipe possibilities are nearly endless, as with any other smoothies.
For the sake of this post though we’re going to give you a recipe for a delicious strawberry Red Bull smoothie. Strawberries are rich in antioxidants and have a relatively low carb content. That means this recipe can be great for keto-ers, diabetics and people who just enjoy tasty libations.

Recipe #1 - Simply Delicious Strawberry Red Bull Smoothie
- 8.4 oz. to 12 oz. can of Red Bull (use the smaller can if you like a thicker smoothie)
- 1 cup of strawberries (fresh or frozen is fine)
- ½ frozen banana (for creaminess)
Add the Red Rull to the blender first, then add the ice. If you have a bit of a weak blender and are using frozen strawberries, you should give the Red Bull, ice and frozen fruit a few pulses to pulverize the frozen stuff before adding the banana and blending until smooth.
If you have a high powered blender, throw all the ingredients in and blend away. If it’s too thin, add more ice or fruit. If it’s too thick, add more Red Bull (or water. Don’t worry, it won’t ruin it).
Recipe #2 - Diabetic and Keto Friendly Strawberry Red Bull Smoothie
(Only 12 to 13 grams of carbs)
- 8.4 oz. to 12 oz. can of SUGAR FREE Red Bull (use the smaller can if you like a thicker smoothie. 0 carbs)
- ¾ cup of strawberries (about 9 grams of carbs. Low on the glycemic index)
- ¼ cup of cantaloupe (for creaminess – about 3 – 4 grams of carbs. This can be omitted and a full cup of strawberries can be used as well and the carb count stays about the same.)
Add the Red Bull to the blender, then your ice. If you have a weak blender, pulverize the ice before adding your other ingredients. After your ice is sufficiently crushed, you can add the rest of your ingredients and blend until smooth.
If you have a high powered blender, you can just toss everything in and blend. If your smoothie is too thick, you can add more red Bull or water without changing the carb count. Conversely, if it’s too thin, you can add more ice to thicken without changing the carb count.
Delicious and Nutritious Additives:
The two recipes above are perfect for almost everyone looking for a nutritious smoothie that comes with a boost of energy. However, those recipes can definitely be altered to suit your needs. For instance:
Add MCT Oil
MCT stands for medium-chain-triglycerides which are medium-length chains of fats that are easy to digest. A benefit to MCT oil is that it can help you feel fuller longer. Plus, if you are doing keto, MCT oil can be converted to ketones, which happens when fat is broken down on a low carb diet.
Add a Bit of Milk for Extra Creaminess
This isn’t weird. I promise. It won’t change the flavor or curdle or do anything weird. It’ll simply add some creaminess. If you are doing keto, you can use heavy whipping cream which has zero carbs. Conversely, if you don’t do dairy, you can use unsweetened almond milk, unsweetened coconut milk, unsweetened macadamia milk, or unsweetened flax milk, which all only have about 1 gram of carbs per cup!
Add Flaxseed or Ground Flaxseed
If you have a high powered blender, you can add whole flaxseeds and they will be pulverized just fine. However, if your blender is a bit weak, just opt to use ground flax so you don’t have flax seed grit in your smoothie. Flax seeds have about 2 grams of carbs per tablespoon (just fyi for our keto-ers). They are high in omega-3 fatty acids which have heart health benefits. Flax seeds are high in fiber which can aid digestion. Plus, the little guys are a great source of plant-based protein.
Add Hemp Hearts
If you are a keto-er and the 2 grams of carbs in flax seeds is too rich for your blood, you can opt for hemp hearts instead. There is just one gram of carbs in three tablespoons of hemp hearts and the health benefits are definitely comparable to flax seed. Hemp hearts are a rich source of omega-3s and omega-6s. They also contain vitamin E, phosphorus, potassium, sodium, magnesium, calcium, iron and zinc. Furthermore, they are an easily digestible source of plant protein.
Experiment with Adding Different Fruits or Vegetables
Keto friendly fruits and veggies include raspberries, blackberries, blueberries, strawberries, avocados and leafy green veggies, such as kale and spinach. When making your Red Bull smoothie on keto, you can experiment with these keto friendly foods. If you're not on keto, you have nearly endless fruit options. People tend to like extra creamy smoothies, so adding bananas, peaches, mangoes, cantaloupe or apricots can facilitate this.
Experiment with Your Red Bull
The final thing you can tweak about these recipes is the flavor of Red Bull you use in your Red Bull smoothie. Some of the Red Bull flavors include:
- Yellow Edition - Also called Tropical. This would be a great addition if you're making a refreshing summer libation.
- Orange Edition - Orange-mango flavored. It has zero sugar.
- Red Edition - Also called Cranberry. Add this to smoothies or your next Red Bull vodka.
- Summer Edition - This one is coconut berry flavored.
- Purple Edition - This is one of their sugar free options. It’s kind of generically fruity, so it would be a good smoothie additive.
- Blue Edition - Blueberry flavored. Definitely a great call if you’re planning on a berry forward smoothie!
- Lime Edition - A sugar free option … This flavor isn’t for everyone. Just a recommendation, but try it before you make a smoothie out of it. The lime-iness with the Red Bull-ness makes it a bit aggressive to drink.
The important thing here is that we all learned that we can make caffeinated smoothies. Thank gosh we’re coming to the end of quarantine, but we all have a few extra pounds and an erratic sleep schedule to contend with.
