What You Need to Prepare

In order for you to get the desired result I got, you will not be needing any fancy equipment or an apple press. Hence, it is quite cheap and affordable without compromising on the quality of the taste of your cider.

  1. Apple: Having all the types of apple (crab apple, sweet apple) and pears is the fundamental ingredient you need. Remember that the apples must be fresh and 100% organic, this will guarantee the great taste of cider.
  2. Juicer: I used a masticating juicer every time. This type of juicer makes your cider production easier and retains the quality of the final product.
  3. A Good Chopping Knife and Cutting Board
  4. Sieve and Clean Towel
  5. Demijohn, Funnel, Stopper, Siphon Hose, and Airlocks: These are very important equipment to put in place if you want to have the easiest of brewing process. This helps you keep your cider in great conditions.

Washing your Fruits

This is very important and rational. You have to keep all the fruits you would be using to make your hard cider in very healthy and clean conditions, so you won’t compromise on the health benefits of the final product.

Chop the Apples

Best hard cider recipe
  1. All you need to do in this case is to cut the apples into quarters which help you see if there is any form of bug inside the apple.
  2. Do away with those that are infested and cut away bruised spot on the apple.
  3. Wash it all over again and drop it in a bowl situated very close to your juicer for ease of access while juicing.

Remember that you don’t have to remove the stems as it would be separated by the masticating juicer.

Juicing

  1. Pour the washed and chopped fruits into the masticating juicer and start juicing.
  2. Once the pitcher is filled up, pour it carefully into your sterilized demijohn using a good funnel.

This is really easy. Alternatively for you if you don’t have a juicer, you can make use of a blender to get a great juice.

Pulp Process

Immediately you notice that your pulp container is full, commence the extraction of the juice. In cases where you have a pulp that is not dry, it is advisable that you make use of your kitchen towel to wring it.

Your sieve should be placed over the available clean bowl and your towel must be in line with it.

The pomace should be really dry and you can pour it to your demijohn and continue with the juicing process.

Addition of Brown Sugar

Don’t dwell too much on this step as the sugar added here will be used up during fermentation, hence there is room to add sugar to it once the brewing is completed and you feel the need for more.

I prefer drinking a litter sour apple hard cider, hence, I drop 150grams of sugar into 1liter of my apple juice. If you want it to be sweeter than that, you can add more grams of sugar. It is all dependent on the taste you wish to get.

Don’t dwell too much on this step as the sugar added here will be used up during fermentation, hence there is room to add sugar to it once the brewing is completed and you feel the need for more.

Removal of Foams

This step is not mandatory, but it is important in cases where you have lot of foams and you want to remove it tentatively.

  1. All you need is to insert your demijohn in a tray and keep it in a warm place for couple of days, this ignite the activities of the yeast.
  2. The yeast becomes effectively active, making the cider split into different layers due to its bubbling effects on the cider.
  3. The foamy parts will invariably come out from the demijohn and your cider is free of any foamy pulp.

Closure

This is where your stopper and airlock become useful for you. Insert a rubber stopper with an airlock on the demijohn that contains the cider and leaves it for 8 days.

Shelf the Cider

Best hard cider recipe
  1. Carefully pour out the content of the demijohn into another sterilized demijohn.
  2. This process will effectively leave the thick contents in the bottom of the initial demijohn which in turn give you a cleaner and high-quality cider made from the best hard cider recipe.
  3. You have to taste it at this point to confirm if it’s sweet enough for you.
  4. In cases where it is not, you can add sugar to it.

Bottling

Finally, if you love your cider to be sweet, you can bottle it up after about a week. In case you don’t like the very fizzy cider, you can bottle yours after three weeks, this will allow it ferment very well. After making the decision of how sweet you want it to be, you can then use your siphon hose to fill the swing-top bottle. This bottle is popularly used because it doesn’t give glass explosion as a result of pressure.
